U.S. Aluminum Architectural Systems Contribute
to Innovative Washington D.C. Residence Built
From Upcycled Shipping Containers

CRL's U.S. Aluminum Division supplies its architectural aluminum systems to a celebrated architect's project devoted to green architecture and building in the nation's capital.

LOS ANGELES, CA - October 21, 2014 - Renowned Washington D.C.-based architect Travis Price III, FAIA, is known for his distinctively innovative approach to green architecture and modern design. Travis Price Architects alongside Brookland Equity Group designed and built SeaUA, Washington D.C.'s first residential project to utilize sea shipping containers, a growing trend in eco-building. Instead of following traditional LEED® Certification targets, the architects sought to address deeper ecological, design, and affordable housing issues in the city's up-and-coming Brookland neighborhood. Sustainability advocate and project architect Travis Price III, FAIA, designed a new 24-occupant apartment building for recent graduates of the Catholic University of America, where he is a professor.

Travis Price Architects aimed to provide the area with modern affordable housing options for rising millennials with environmentally conscious building principles and practices. The building consists of 4 levels, with each floor serving as one unit with six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and shared common areas. The new-build project features a unique pairing of repurposed shipping containers, modern glass elements, and CRL-U.S. Aluminum architectural systems that outfit the new residential building.

Installed by Roy's Glass Services (WV), CRL-U.S. Aluminum provided key fenestration solutions that would align with the project's functional and aesthetic demands. Series 3000 High Performance Thermal Sliding Doors provide units with exceptional thermal performance, featuring thermally broken head channels and bottom tracks. Heavy-duty adjustable tandem rollers ensure smooth operation throughout years of rotating tenants.

A mix of fixed and operable window units comprised of Series IT451 Thermal Storefront and Series 7300 Operable Casement Windows further mitigate energy loss and optimize efficiency. The Series IT451 features Poly-Aluminizer™ and Lancer™ Thermal Break Technologies, providing exceptional thermal performance combined with low-cost conventional flush glazing. The Series 7300 employs a polyurethane thermal break and reinforced corner construction to yield an impressive HC-75 rating.

Precision-engineered CRL-U.S. Aluminum systems ultimately met the project design team's aesthetic and green performance needs by outfitting the SeaUA apartments with striking solutions that translated into tangible energy-savings for the building and its residents.

"The SeaUA Housing Project speaks to many of the foundational concepts that drive our own product development; innovation, versatility, efficiency, and sustainability," says Gerald Hendrick, President of U.S. Aluminum. "We're proud to have our systems featured in such an ambitious and progressive project."
